Who counts

Every active legal person with filed annual accounts: its latest balance sheet, added up at the address of its registered office. Sole traders file no accounts and do not count.

Which period

Each company's latest balance sheet, closed after 30 September 2024: at most 24 months old. Added up again every night, last on 30 September 2026.

How to read it

Figures at the registered office: a balance sheet sits where the seat is registered, not where the plants, shops or staff are. By default the plain sum of what the companies filed.

Survivor bias: per fiscal year only the accounts of the companies active today count, at their current seat. Those that have since gone bankrupt, stopped or moved do not count in earlier years either, so the trend can show earlier years lower or higher than they were. The last year is still incomplete.

How these figures are made
  • Each company's latest balance sheet, closed after 30 September 2024: at most 24 months old. Added up again every night, last on 30 September 2026.
  • At the registered office: a company's balance sheet counts where its seat is registered (Crossroads Bank for Enterprises), not where its branches, plants or staff are. A head office in Brussels thus carries the balance sheet of a group with plants elsewhere.
  • By default the plain sum of what every company filed: parent and subsidiary then both count, so a stake sits in both balance sheets. With the option without double counting within groups, a subsidiary is left out of a sum in which its Belgian parent, direct or higher up the group, already counts. Parents per the annual accounts and the LEI register. Which subsidiaries drop out then depends on the place and the filters, so municipalities do not always add up to their province.
  • Negative equity counts in the total; how many companies have it is shown too. A median only from 10 companies with the line; per 1,000 inhabitants only down to the municipality (Statbel, 1 January 2024), since there is no population per postcode, street or address.
  • Every street and address with its figures and companies, even with only one or two: they are legal persons with public filed accounts. Sole traders file no accounts and are not in it.
  • The map draws municipalities (Statbel boundaries, 2025 division): postcodes, streets and addresses have no boundaries in the open data and are in the tables. The colours are quantiles: each shade covers roughly the same number of municipalities.
  • Not placed, for want of a Belgian seat address we can place: companies with recent accounts, count 139.
