Method and sources

Companies counted

Every active legal person with filed annual accounts counts. Its latest balance sheet is added up at the address of its registered office. Sole traders file no accounts and do not count.

Period

Each company's latest balance sheet closed after 01-11-2024 counts, so at most 24 months old. The figures are added up again every night, last on 01-11-2026.

Reading guide

The figures sit at the registered office. A balance sheet counts where the seat is registered, not where the plants, shops or staff are. By default you see the plain sum of what the companies filed.

  • The balance sheet of a group with plants elsewhere thus counts in Brussels, if its head office is there.
  • By default you see the plain sum of what every company filed. Parent and subsidiary then both count, so a stake sits in both balance sheets. With the option without double counting within groups, a subsidiary is left out of a sum in which its Belgian parent already counts, directly or higher up the group. The parents come from the annual accounts and the LEI register. Which subsidiaries drop out depends on the place and the filters. Municipalities then do not always add up to their province.
  • Negative equity counts in the total. The number of companies with negative equity is shown too. A median needs at least 10 companies with the line. The figure per 1,000 inhabitants exists only down to the municipality (Statbel, 1 January 2024), since there is no population per postcode, street or address.
  • Every street and address is in the tables with its figures and companies, even when there are only one or two. They are legal persons with public filed accounts. Sole traders file no accounts and are not in them.
  • The map shows municipalities, with Statbel's boundaries in the 2025 division. Postcodes, streets and addresses have no boundaries in the open data and are in the tables. The colours are quantiles. Each shade covers roughly the same number of municipalities.
  • Zoom in further and the map shows Statbel's statistical sectors, such as neighbourhoods, village centres and business parks. A company counts in the sector where its seat's address point lies. Sometimes that point is only on the street, because the house number was not found. The company then counts in a sector only if the point falls at least 100 metres inside that sector. The other companies are not placed. They count in their municipality, not in a sector. Of all companies on the map, 95.6% are placed in a sector. The trend per sector follows the companies placed there today.
  • 147 companies with recent accounts are not on the map, for want of a Belgian seat address that can be placed.
